Xbox 360 System Sales Pass 28 Million Units Worldwide

Microsoft announced today it has sold more than 28 million units worldwide of its Xbox 360 video game console since the system's launch, expanding its lead over Sony's PlayStation 3 by 8 million units worldwide. Last month, the company announced the Xbox 360 reached an install base of 25 million units after record Black Friday sales.

The software giant also announced today that Xbox Live reached 17 million members at the end of 2008, with online consumer spending on the online service increasing 84 percent year-over-year. Microsoft proudly revealed that consumers have spent over $1 billion on Xbox Live since its launch for the Xbox 360 in 2005.
Aaron Greenberg, group product manager for Xbox 360, told Reuters that 2008 "was our biggest year ever in Xbox history" despite the global financial and economic crisis.
